Drums

Jon Berry plays drums I always tell people playing drums is not really a choice, more of a calling. If you asked most drummers, my guess is they would say that drums chose them. Certainly that was the case for me. When I was a kid, all I knew was that I had to play drums. I got my first set of drums at age 11, took a few lessons to get a jump start, and have been totally hooked and primarily self-taught since then.

My early drum set influences were classic rock, progressive rock, funk and R&B music. Rush, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin were my primary early influences (Peart, Mitchell, Bonham). I've since followed rhythmic breadcrumbs into nearly every style of music, leading down paths of exploration in reggae, ska, punk, jazz-fusion and all of their modern derivatives. All captured my attention and become inspiration for woodshedding.

The first time I performed for an audience, I fell in love with the live dynamic and instant feedback. I've played in many Dayton-area funk, rock, jam, blues and reggae bands, and continue to perform and record.

I'm always pushing myself to refine my skills and open new rhythmic doors. Drumming is an art form with endless possibilities. My passion for developing a large vocabulary on the drums has has helped me become a well-rounded musician (and an evolved human being). I’m convinced that drumming’s demand for full mind and body coordination helps develop both sides of the brain — to the point where I’m more than comfortable saying this: drummers are smarter. :)

Drumming is a lifelong journey. Like any art form, if you think you've become a master of your craft, then your ability to keep learning and growing is stunted. #PlayOnDrummer
